Planning
Thorough planning is critical to the success of every expedition or camp – try to anticipate the worst case scenario and be prepared…
- Get any relevant maps, plan the route(s) and
produce route cards for each member.
More info (overnight locations, emergency routes, can be found in the “Route Planning” document). - Be familiar with local bye-laws, events, restrictions and seek any landowners’ permission if necessary.
- Identify a home contact and arrange some ‘check-in’ phone calls at particular times.
- Review the kit list and ensure the necessary items are obtained in plenty of time.
Pre-Flight
These activities are usually enacted the day or night before leaving for the expedition.
- Obtain the required food and water – prepare anything relevant (e.g. make sandwiches).
- Safety check equipment, apply relevant water-proofing and charge batteries before packing kit.
- Check road traffic incidents/transport times and check the destination weather forecast.
- Provide a route plan to your home contact and agree first check-in time.
Kit List
You are responsible for your own personal equipment and to ensure it is well packed. This list is not exhaustive so add any items required, specific to your expedition/camp. In groups, it may be useful to apply name tags to identify your kit. Pack your kit in a way that items you’re more likely need to need are readily accessible.
