Boycott: Otley Burger Company

Joe Scholey, Otley Burger Company

The owner, Joe Scholey, thinks it is appropriate to promote his meat burgers using images of paedophiles, sex offenders, rapists and the image of an abducted 3-year old girl.

Although I am unlikely to ever buy anything from this company in reality, they are on my boycott list. The proprietor, Joe Scholey, must have a sick mind. For many people, Mother’s day and Father’s day are traditional celebrations of the selfless love and care that parents provide their children. Joe Scholey decided to use social media and his business to make the following posts:

  • Mother’s Day 2020 – An image of Karen Matthews. This was a woman who imprisoned her own daughter to garner attention and money. Child abuse (and specifically children held in captivity) should not be used to promote burgers.
  • Father’s Day 2021 – An advert featuring serial killers, rapists and genocidal dictators was posted. This is clearly the product of a disturbed mind.
  • Mother’s Day 2022 – An advert posted, via various channels, featuring Madeline McCann and her mother. Madeline was abducted, aged 3, in Portugal and to this date, her disappearance is unresolved. The text “Happy Mother’s Day to all the mums out there”.

Quite clearly Joe Scholey has a disturbed mind. I would not feel comfortable funding the enterprise of an individual that thinks topics such as genocide or childhood sexual exploitation; are there for amusement or to promote burgers. He has deliberately used these adverts for his deviant ideology and to cause offense to both people who were directly victims of these perpetrators and more generally victims of abuse.
