To mitigate this, I decided to maintain a list of games. (I seem to have inherited this propensity toward collecting and cataloguing things from my Dad). I found a great website that has information on a massive array of titles; and this has invoked yet more nostalgia for me.

I seem to have amassed huge collections of digital media although, admittedly, I haven’t ‘consumed’ everything. My photography, ebooks and podcasts are just files in folders, indexed by Windows. I am reluctantly transitioning from mp3s to You Tube music – I say reluctantly because I feel like I’m forfeiting control. I abandoned DVDs a decade ago so my movies are on a Plex Media server. Plex is great because, you dump the movie on there and it supplements the movie with additional information, presumably from imdb.

That leaves gaming. I needed something to check, out and about, in case a title caught my eye. A Google Keep note got disordered and a spreadsheet seemed high maintenance if not a little formal. I needed something like imdb so that I could a title and the software does the rest. After trying out a few websites, bingo, I found rawg.io and it is the perfect solution. You can even just connect gaming profiles (e.g. Steam, Playstation Network, Xbox) and it will automatically pull in your game game library and their associated details. I just needed to know title and what platform I have the game on but it supplies so much more. You can see my game library on there: https://rawg.io/@retrojimmyx

I wouldn’t describe myself as a serious gamer (nor indeed particularly good) but as I started flicking through the catalogue of title dating back over several decades, I realised I do seem to have a long history of gaming, dating back to the 80s. Computer games have evolved at an incredible pace in my lifetime and the industry is estimated to be worth a phenomenal $180 billion this year alone. I would not of (but should of) anticipated that in the 90s.

Our family’s Commodore Amiga 500 in the late 80s

My first recollection of computer gaming was our family Commodore Amiga 500. The competitor product to the Amiga was the Atari but I had no experience of it. I was recently chatting to a guy who runs a gaming trade shop and he said that the Atari was viewed as more of a serious machine and one that musicians were drawn to because of its MIDI capabilities. The Amiga was definitely seen as more of a gaming computer, although I vaguely remember using it for typing up the odd document and printing out on the dot matrix printer (also pictured). As a little digression: I dated a girl in the 2000s at Uni and we lived in a seven person house share. We’d all know when she’d have an essay due because she had an A3 dot matrix printer and oh my God, those printers were noisy.

When we got the Amiga, I was in awe: This was my first foray from the world of analogue into the digital world. The Amiga 500 had 512 kilobytes of RAM (and we did later get the 512K expansion module). Now to put that into perspective, Samsung’s current flagship mobile phone, the Galaxy S21, has 8GB of memory. That’s over 16,000 times as much memory as the Amiga 500 in a device that is a fraction of the size! And that’s not considering the speed of the RAM either.

Commodore Amiga 500, released in 1987

The Amiga 500 was an all-in-one unit where the computer and (mechanical) keyboard were built into the same housing. There was a roller ball (not laser) mouse and we had joystick. It used 3.5″ floppy discs, which could each hold just under 1.5 Mb. I wouldn’t be able to even fit a single photo taken with my phone on one of these discs now. Although they seemed so small now I actually still saw some businesses using them well into the 2000s. As you can see from the picture above, the Amiga displayed on a(CRT) TV – definitely not high-def.

We must have bought games for the Amiga but I can’t recall seeing that many game boxes and without DRM, floppies were easy to copy so perhaps we got copied games. I’m guessing the game, Batman (released in the same year as the movie), was bundled in with the Amiga. This is the first game I remember playing. I was in awe of the movie and the game. It’s funny to see that the franchise is still very much alive, decades later. Here’s a few videos of the games I remember most fondly – it’s the sound effects that invoke feelings of nostalgia for me more than anything else for some reason.

<span class="embed-youtube" style="text-align:center; This truly was a marvel as it was the first 3D game I played. The game had a physical code wheel which you turned in order to provide the correct responses to code prompts and launch into the game. It really added to experience of being a fighter pilot, in the late hours of the night. Sadly, we lost the code wheel once the Amiga had been relegated into storage and when I attempted a retro gaming session years later, I just couldn’t get passed the code screen. The game was superb. You could land on aircraft carriers as well as, of course, conclude a dogfight with a timely sidewinder missile. I think this game started my penchant for combat flight sims later on the PC; although I never found a good console flight sim.

The Amiga range of consoles were actually still being sold until the early 1990s and games until the mid-90s but the demise of Commodore International was protracted and not expected, with huge losses over the latter years.

Sega Game Gear, released in 1990

For Christmas in 1990, my brother and I got a a portable games console each: the Sega Game Gear. Sega was not just a publisher in the 90s but also made hardware. My brother later had a Sega Master System and Megadrive, from what I remember. The Game Gears were not only had better games in terms of graphics and gameplay but they were portable – although their size probably wouldn’t pass for portability nowadays. I remember a few boys having the (much more iconic) Nintendo Gameboy but I always felt the Game Gear had the edge – a colour screen. We got a link cable so we could connect them together and play against each other. We actually had a TV tuner to plug into one and we were able to watch TV on the go. These were the perfect accompaniment for long journeys in the back of the car when we would holiday abroad.

The games came on small robust cartridges and I can’t remember all the games we had but here’s some of my favourites.

Sonic the Hedgehog (1991) – Sonic was to Sega as Mario was to Nintendo.

Streets of Rage (1991)

Mortal Kombat (1992)

We had a few years usage out of the Game Gears and they resided in the attic for a few years afterward. The BBC Micro was distributed in the early 80s as part of a UK initiative to improve digital literacy and almost every school had at least one. The BBC Micro was, of course, much more than a gaming machine. Our childminder, a retired teacher, had one at home and my brother and I would play on it when we went round to her house, which is why it wasn’t until the 90s before I came across one, but after using the Amiga and other consoles it felt like an antique.

Waiting for games to load off the 5″ floppy discs. There was a particular sequence in which things had to be done to load up a game and it was unforgiving at worst and temperamental at best. I don’t remember playing a wide variety of games – just Chuckie Egg and Elite. I could never get to the high levels on Chuckie Egg but Elite, however, was incredible: You could explore an Entire universe. I’d longed for a return of this game and can’t express the joy I had when I discovered a few years ago that Elite Dangerous had been made.

Chuckie Egg (1983) on the BBC Micro

Elite (1984) on the BBC MIcro

The government-sponsored rollout probably makes this machine a prominent piece of tech nostalgia for any child who attended school in the 1980s. It’s surprising then that 40 years later, the UK government is still struggling to improve digital literacy in school children. I re-trained in 2018 in teaching as a consequence to more recent changes in the national curriculum to introduce computer science. I would definitely echo the many studies that indicate that, sadly, despite our history of computing innovation, our younger generations (in state education) simply lack the skills and knowledge for the digital age. Ironic really, that the majority seem addicted to their mobile phones but then again a theme of many of Asimov’s stories (e.g. the ‘Feeling of Power’) is that many technologically advanced civilisations end up forgetting the fundamentals of how to build or repair that technology. It never ceased to amaze me how many kids’ parents would be interested in their son undertaking GCSE computer science because they played computer games a lot. I drive a car, doesn’t mean I’m a mechanic.

My Dad worked with computers and so I had exposure to IBM PCs from a young age. When he got a new laptop, his old one would work its way into my hands. I certainly remember tinkering with MS-DOS 5.0 and Windows 3.0 as my earliest memories of working with a Windows operating system. We got a Pentium 75 (and Pentium 90 a year later) in the mid-90s and this was really when my affinity with computing began. Using a CD-ROM drive was a game changer, no pun intended, what with its 700Mb capacity.

Unlike consoles where there are distinct generations of consoles and their games, PC gaming really began in the 90s and has spanned three decades. I use consoles nowadays for convenience and because having it in the lounge is a little more social than a personal computer. I have to admit though that PC gaming always has been far superior to console gaming, albeit often more expensive. There is a greater amount of flexibility through modding and this can transform a game. Some mods even became games in their own right such as Counter Strike or PUBG.

PC gaming in the 90s was was superb – it felt, again, like a major step up. The Web existed but it wasn’t as ubiquitous as nowadays. Bill Gates famously downplayed its importance in the mid 90s but it is likely that was more strategic. Nevertheless, the limitations of a 56K modem and the impracticalities of accessing the Internet meant forfeiting your phone line, meant it really wasn’t widely adopted. So people still used magazines for tech news and in the 90s it seemed every magazine would have a CD attached that would have software and game demos. Sometimes, you’d even get full games. CD burners weren’t commonplace though so it wasn’t until the early 2000s that I saw copied games (and DVDs) at markets.

Some of the earliest PC games I remember still ran in MS-DOS (6.22 to be exact – the last official version) as running Windows and a game was too much for most PCs. DOS for the uninitiated, was command-line interface (CLI) operating system as opposed to a graphical user interface (GUI) like Windows. The 90s was a time when games arcades were popular and a regular hangout for kids wanting to play the latest games (like Ridge Racer). Meadowhall once had such an arcade and even though some exist nowadays, they are no where near as popular as they were in he 80s and 90s. PCs brought (almost) arcade-quality games into the home. Some of my favourite PC games from the 90s are below.

<span class="embed-youtube" style="text-align:center; At the time, this game was revolutionary and by the time I’d read the thick detailed game manual, I was convinced I was qualified to fly the real thing. Flight mechanics were superb, from taxiing, take-offs, landing, dogfights, staying under the radar level through to mid-air refuelling. The game was incredibly realistic. It used AWACs, had realistic payload trade-offs and it certainly wasn’t just a case of firing long-range missiles at radar blips. If I ignore the graphics, to be honest, I haven’t ever since played a combat flight simulator that has given me the same degree of realism. I even remember that it has VR support – in 1995!

The 90s PC game I remember most fondly began a franchise that is still, probably, the most-adored game franchise ever: Grand Theft Auto. We would have long gaming sessions (he was unbeatable though) and I remember Goldeneye and Mario Kart on the N64 and Wipeout on the Playstation.

Mario Kart (1996)

Goldeneye (1997) N64

Wipeout 3 (1999) Playstation

I can’t remember many other students having PCs when I was at Uni in the early 2000s. I don’t think this was so much affordability as a lack of interest. For me the computer was a gateway to the Web and the wider world. Perhaps it was more to do with form factor as it was a bit geeky to have a PC on the Web in the 90s but nowadays everybody seem constantly connected through mobile phones and tablets. An Internet-connected PC suddenly opened up multiplayer online gaming and no longer was I bound by the availability or interests of friends, I could play anybody around the world. I played some 90s games in the 2000s and more modern games like Unreal Tournament 2003, Counter Strike, Grand Theft Auto 3 and Half-Life 2.

At Uni, and shortly after, most of my gaming was on friends’ consoles so we’d typically play multiplayer games. I never got into console single-player campaign mode games in the 2000s. My friend was the only guy in halls who had an Xbox and we’d spend many hours almost exclusively on Halo. Later, I lived in large shared houses, and again, the choices would often be Halo 2 or Project Gotham Racing 2.

Halo 2 (2004) Multiplayer on the Xbox

Project Gotham Racing 2 (2004) on the Xbox

After I no longer lived in shared housing with friends and didn’t invest in a gaming PC or console for myself, my gaming pursuits stagnated from the mid-2000s. I re-kindled my love of gaming in 2007. I had little disposable income so concluded it would be more cost-effective to get a previous generation console, the original Xbox, and cheaper pre-owned games but impulsively left the store with an Xbox 360. I didn’t regret the decision as the 360 was a massive jump up from the original Xbox. I would argue, in terms of differences between generations, this was the largest. I spent all my time with my best friend who lived in the flat above but he wasn’t really interested in gaming at all, so Xbox gaming was a solitary affair for me for a couple of years.

My Xbox 360 had gotten the infamous red ring of death but my friend had sourced us both a good deal on a couple of Xbox 360 slims in 2010. He struggled for a long time to get the hand-eye coordination needed for first-person shooters and even driving games. It was agonising to be frank. It felt that no sooner had we got the consoles, then I’d moved from Birmingham to start a job down South. I would play on the 360 on the rare occasion but for the most part we’d both shelved our consoles. He’d discovered Fable II (wasn’t my sort of game) and loved it and I, in turn, had discovered Minecraft. We would play the odd game online together such as Battlefield 1943 but most of the time my console gaming was more solitary than social.

Minecraft on the Xbox 360

I’d actually dismissed Minecraft for years since its release as its 8-bit styled graphics seemed a backward step for a modern console. I was asked to help a teenage out with their gaming addiction. They were addicted Minecraft specifically. My logic was to understand the game and get into their mindset so that I’m not blindly preaching at them. I bought a copy myself and, perhaps ironically, became addicted myself. There’s an article in itself – I am dubious as to gaming addiction. I know for myself when I’ve had periods of long hours gaming in the night its been the times in my life I have been down and unable to share my feelings with others. Quite simply, for some young men in particular, gaming serves as an escape.

Minecraft was simply brilliant. My Brimingham friend couldn’t understand why I was making so much fuss about the game but with a little persuasion he acquired a copy and, in turn, got hooked. We loved Minecraft. He claims it had transformed his life by unleashing a creative mindset. You can enjoy Minecraft in ‘survival’ mode as a relatively typical game but it’s when it comes to the creative building or the problem-solving redstone circuits, that it’s true power is realised. There’s even a (valid) educational version of Minecraft where you can use block style coding. Minecraft would be number two on my ‘desert island games’ list. It was, and still is, awesome.

The game has a small learning curve but it takes a couple of hours before something clicks and you realise just how incredible the game is. I suppose that may depend though on how creative you are. I haven’t played Minecraft properly for a couple of years now but I still have a world of creations on a server ready to jump back into.

We got copies of GTA V for the 360 and that was another game we both hammered online together and separately. I doubt anybody will need an introduction to GTA V. I was happy with my Xbox 360 for a decade – mostly because I acquired a catalogue of games faster than I’d play them so I saw little point in upgrading. Although the Xbox One had better graphics, it all seemed to be the same gameplay mechanics in essence though – and its mainly the mechanics I love about gaming. I think the changes in gameplay mechanics from the 90s to the late 2000s were massive but the iterations nowadays seem so much smaller.

My partner in 2015 was not a gamer and in fact, the digital revolution seemed to have passed by her completely. We both elected to spend leisure time outdoors but nevertheless, I wanted her to experience the joys of gaming. I’d always associated Nintendo with more fun and light-hearted gaming so I got a Nintendo Wii (in mint condition with all the accessories for £25). We played a lot of the fitness type games and made use of the Wii Fit but it wasn’t long before we realised you could bowl just as well sitting down so it lost its novelty. I only had about ten games for it.

Star Fox Zero really utilises the additional screen on the Wii U.

Fast-forward to 2018 and a friend showed me his Nintendo Switch. I remembered how simple and fun Nintendo games were but the Switch and the games held their price well so I did a bit of research and decided to get a Nintendo Wii U. The Wii U was not successful so the console was cheap (I’d got a mint condition console for £50) and games were cheap. It is such an underrated console! It’s completely backwards compatible with all Wii games and peripherals. I love the novelty of the supplementary screen in the controller. Some games really take advantage of the screen as well; like Star Fox Zero, Splatoon and some of the Super Mario titles.

The consoles very easy to hack (and being cheap is low risk) so for £50 you can get access to the entire Wii and Wii U catalogue of games. It could be argued that games developers aren’t seeing revenue any more from the sale of used games but I would of course not recommend such a course of action.

I did have a mini-renaissance of PC gaming in early 2018. I discovered the superb website G2A.com (referral link) while I was searching for the cheapest Xbox Live membership online. I found European Truck Simulator 2 for £4 and because I was working in the commercial automotive industry at the time I thought I might as well find out what it’s like to drive a HGV – albeit in a simulation. I spent hours on ETS2 – it was almost meditative. In fact, it was playing that game that helped me discover meditation! Driving lorries around the UK sounds boring but there’s something very calming and yet equally satisfying about it. There’s quite a few people who stream ETS2 gameplay online (including the Scottish surrealist comedian Limmy) so that following indicates it’s not just a game for anoraks that fetishize trucks – although there’s probably still a fair amount of them.

ETS2

I got so into the game, I actually acquired a racing wheel and an IR head tracker (similar to track IR). Combine these with a triple monitor setup and the experience was really immersive. Having now discovered Steam platform, I later got hold of Elite Dangerous and, again, the experience was immersive. I got quite a few PC games via G2A codes on Steam and have enjoyed PC gaming since. I tend to stick to the more simple puzzlers and platformers on the PC and I really enjoy exploring artistic games like Lumino City (where everything on screen was actually made using physical paper, cardboard and glue) and Brother – A Tale of Two Sons; as well as the more obscure games like Antichamber that torments your Euclidean notion of how the universe should work.

Lumino City

Brothers – A Tale of Two Sons

Antichamber (2013)

Some games really lend themselves well to a keyboard and mice – especially the more technical construction games like Kerbal Space Program (KSP) or Space Engineers. I’ve never really had time to ‘dedicate’ to watching TV even when I did have one. I tend to watch something on a screen in the background while I am working on something else. However, Dune was due out in October this year so I got a 4K set because, well, I love my sci-fi. I wanted to move my console out of the office and hook it up to the TV in the lounger to have separate work and leisure rooms. I anticipated the Xbox 360’s native 720p wouldn’t do a 4K set justice so decided to get a 4K console before the TV arrived. I’m not going to go latest gen while the games are still £60 a pop so I settled on an Xbox One X. Incidentally, I was completely wrong about the Xbox 360 – it looks great on a 4K set.

RetroJimmyX

Of course, I could have got my first Sony console and, in fairness, Xbox One vs PS4 was a tough decision. I stayed with Xbox because I’ve never gotten used to Playstation controllers but I think it’s probably more related to the same reason why I am still Canon and not Nikon – you just feel committed to one or the other. I’ve had the Xbox One X and TV for a month now, with the (excellent) Game Pass Ultimate, but barely played on it. Gaming has always been more of a Winter pastime for me: I tend to start around November time (hence the timing of this article) and finish the season around March. Well, the evenings are getting colder now so maybe it’s time to get this year’s gaming season underway.

I think the other reason I haven’t punced on the Xbox is evident when I consider my Xbox avatar. My gaming handle is RetroJimmyX and my avatar is wearing retro clothing. I post a lot of nostalgic content, particularly retro tech. Perhaps I’m just more interested in retro tech and gaming and these new fangled consoles are just my last ditch attempt to try and keep pace with gaming trends.

Certainly, you can look forward to me building a Raspberry Pi 4 retro gaming machine in future. I hope you look at some of my recommendations in this post and enjoy discovering some of the older and more modern games.

On a few occasions, I’ve bought a game and found that I already have it in my collection.
