The Malkovich Effect

I got a timer remote release control for my DSLR camera in order to take some timelapse footage on our holiday in Guyana. I didn’t use it much because of the need to mount the camera on a tripod and leave it there – Guyana is not the safest of places. But I did have a good idea.

Being John Malkovich (1999) Movie Poster

One afternoon, I was chilling on the balcony and recalled a scene from one of my favourite films, Being John Malkovich (1999). Now I really don’t want to risk a spoiler here in case you haven’t seen the movie and trust me, you need to watch this movie; and if you have, you’ll know the scene I refer to.

So, I just plonked the camera down and used a timer and ignored it as I went about a productive afternoon of having a smoke and drinking beer on the balcony. I got a few images back and more or less cut-paste myself from a few images into the base image. A bit of deleting the edges and all looked polished.

The result is below. In the scene, Malkovich has a nightmarish time but I think the prospect of multiple instances of myself might perhaps be somebody else’s nightmare.
